Verruca Treatments: in East Kilbride

What are verrucae?

Verrucae are a benign viral lesion which infect the outer layer of the skin. 90% of people carry Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) as part of their normal skin biome. Verrucae occur when the individual’s immune system fails to recognise this virus and keep it in check.

While verrucae can be spread between people by being barefoot in communal areas such as swimming pools and changing rooms, it’s important to understand that having a verruca does not mean you are dirty! These are harmless lesions and do not represent a lack of cleanliness in the affected person, only that your immune system hasn’t yet met this particular virus before.

Verrucae tend to be more common in children/teens as up until the age of 22, our immune system is still developing. They are also common in those who are immunocompromised due to medication or an existing autoimmune disease.

It’s also very important to understand that verrucae in children and teens can self-resolve if left untreated.

However, if the verruca is causing significant pain or embarrassment, then help is available at Feet First!

Falknor’s (Verrucae) Needling Treatment

Falknor`s needling procedure is an innovative and largely effective treatment for verrucae. The aim is to break down the verruca tissue and create a controlled inflammatory response and stimulate your body’s immune system to recognise the virus and destroy it.

The treatment has been around for over 45 years and is used routinely with great success by practitioners internationally.

What to expect:

The procedure is completed under a local anaesthetic; this may involve various injections.

Once the area is numb, any overlying hard skin is reduced. A sterile, empty needle is used to pierce the verruca tissue repeatedly.
Once completed a light dressing is applied with a deflective pad which needs to remain in place and dry for 24hours.

It is advisable to avoid taking NSAIDs (Ibuprofen) or other anti-inflammatory medications for 48 hours to increase the likelihood of a successful controlled inflammatory response.

You will be brought back at 1 week and 6 weeks post procedure to monitor healing and to ascertain if further treatment is required.

It is worth noting that no single treatment for verruca and warts is 100% effective, and there is no guarantee that the verruca will not return.
